Terra Australis 2024 consists of one salon. The salon has six sections:

SUBJECT MATTER AND SECTION DEFINITIONS
Statement on Subject Matter – applicable to all sections
The fundamental rule that must be observed at all times and applies to all sections offered in exhibitions with PSA recognition is that the welfare of living creatures is more important than any photograph. This means that practices such as baiting of subjects with a living creature and removal of birds from nests, for the purpose of obtaining a photograph, are highly unethical, and such photographs are not allowed in any exhibition with PSA recognition. Under no circumstances may a living creature be placed in a situation where it will be killed, injured, or stressed for the purpose of obtaining a photograph. Images that show live creatures being fed to captive animals, birds or reptiles are not permitted under any circumstances.
There are also concerns about the use of aerial photography, drones, helicopters, low flying aircraft. These should not cause any interference with other individuals or animals which causes a disturbance in their normal activity or disrupts the way any individuals or animals interact with their environment. Entrants in PSA recognized exhibitions should comply with all relevant laws and regulations, associated with aerial photography, in the country in which the image was taken.
Entry into PSA recognized exhibitions is conditional on accepting these policies. The content of images must comply with the General Conditions and with the Division and Section definitions listed in these conditions. Images that – in the sole opinion of the judges or the Exhibition Organizers – do not comply, will be disqualified so the entrant may be aware of the problem when considering entry into other exhibitions with PSA recognition.
FIAP STATEMENT ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
“Important information regarding pictures generated by artificial intelligence (AI): Please note that: PICTURES CREATED BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THIS SALON! It is reminded that all parts of the image have to be photographed by the author who is holding the copyright of all works submitted. “Offenders will be sanctioned for life!”
MONOCHROME DEFINITION
PSA Monochrome Definition
An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no colour (i.e: contains only shades of grey which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a grayscale image that has been toned in one colour across the entire image. (For example, by Sepia, red, gold, etc.) A greyscale or multi-coloured image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot colouring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Colour Work.
Greyscale Monochrome images may be entered for Nature, Photojournalism and Photo Travel but toned images are not permitted for these sections.
Monochrome images may not be entered in colour sections of PPD or PID.

FIAP Definition of Monochrome
A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage. On the other hand, a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category; such a work requires colour reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.
COLOUR OPEN SECTION
This section accepts all images which do not meet the definitions of monochrome above.

PEOPLE/PORTRAITS (COLOUR) SECTION
A photograph of a person or persons that may range from a head study to full body length. This section includes candid photographs showing us people in all situations, such as daily life, street photography, traditions, portraits, people at work, social events, human relations. etc. The main subject in the photo must be one or more humans.

Seascapes (COLOUR) SECTION
This section accepts all colour images. A seascape is a photograph of natural coastal scenery, a wave study, or a picture of the open sea, provided, always, that the sea is the centre of interest of the photograph. People, boats and man-made structures may be present as incidental to the photograph.

FROM ABOVE (COLOUR) SECTION
This section accepts all images which do not meet the definitions of monochrome above.
Images entered in this section must be taken from a construction, a higher place or position, “the village terrain is visible from this particular perspective”.

Definition of Photojournalism
Photojournalism entries are images with informative content and emotional impact, reflecting the human presence in our world.

The journalistic (story-telling) value of the image should receive priority over pictorial quality.
Images that misrepresent the truth, such as those from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography, are not eligible.
Editing Guidelines
Processing or editing must be limited to making the image look as close to the original scene as possible.
Allowed editing techniques:
Cropping, straightening and perspective correction.
Removal or correction of elements added by the camera or lens, such as dust spots, noise, chromatic aberration and lens distortion.
Global and selective adjustments such as brightness, hue, saturation and contrast to restore the appearance of the original scene.
Complete conversion of colour images to grayscale monochrome.
Blending of multiple images of the same subject and combining them in camera or with software (exposure blending or focus stacking);
Image stitching – combining multiple images with overlapping fields of view that are taken consecutively (panoramas);
Editing techniques that are not allowed:
Removing, adding to, moving or changing any part of an image, except for cropping and straightening.
Adding a vignette during processing.
Blurring parts of the image during processing to hide elements in the original scene.
Darkening parts of the image during processing to hide elements in the original scene.
All conversions other than to complete grayscale monochrome.
Conversion of parts of an image to monochrome, or partial toning, desaturation or over-saturation of colour.

Group Discount:
A group discount facility is available. A discount of 10% is available for groups of 10 or more entrants. The process works as follows:
1. One person acts as the group manager who makes a single payment to cover all members of the group. The group manager creates a group with a name and an access code.
To create a group name and access code the group manager follows the green Enter button on the home page, signs in, completes contact details, accepts the terms of entry, and then follows the blue Group Payments button.
On this page, they select the option to create a group, enter a group name and an access code, and then saves their group. A four-number code will suffice.
They then contact all prospective members of the group detailing the group name and access code.
The group manager does not have to enter the competition.
Each group member then follows the green Enter button, signs in, completes contact details, accepts terms, and then follows the blue Group Payments button.
They then select the group name in the Join a Group section of the page and enter the access code provided to them by their group manager.
They then proceed to the entry form and enter their images.
They will not be able to pay their entry fee as their group manager is responsible for making a single payment for the entire group.

Digital Judging:
Judging will be conducted online where the judges will be required to use colour-calibrated monitors that are capable of displaying 100% of the image resolution.
Where the image presented is lower than the maximum resolution the images will not be enlarged beyond their native resolution. At no stage will a judge be able to view all the entrant’s images together.
Each judge will score each image using a range of 1 – 9 where the higher score signifies a higher quality image. The total of these scores will be used to determine an acceptance percentage. PSA & FIAP allow an acceptance rate of 30%.

Lewis was born in Hong Kong and educated in Hong Kong, Canada, and USA. He has been interested in photography since elementary school. When he studied in United States for his bachelor’s degree, he travelled around with his cameras and Kodachrome films. After his graduation, he came back to Hong Kong, further studied professional photography, and joined Kodak Far East in a technical post. Before he left Kodak in 2005, he was the product manager in the Digital & Film Imaging Systems to help Kodak develop the business opportunities on the Internet and digital imaging services. He is currently a chartered / registered professional engineer in profession. In photographic networks, he is serving as the Membership Vice President of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), the Director of FIAP Photographer’s Card Service, the President of the Photographic Society of Hong Kong, FIAP Liaison Officer, Hong Kong, and the GPU Representative for Hong Kong to support and foster the photography in worldwide.
Pia Jessen:EFIAP/G, APSEM, SAPS
In her various roles within the Australian Photographic Community Pia champions local, National and International exhibitions, believing participating in exhibitions and competitions pushes photographers of all levels to develop, stretch and learn, as well as keeping abreast of current photography trends. She has judged numerous National and International Salons worldwide and is passionate about People, Nature and adventure travel photography.
Pia has earned high photographic distinctions and recognition in International and National Photographic Exhibitions and has had her work exhibited in a number of countries. Pia’s current roles include Australian Photographic Society Vice President, Australian country leader of International Crossing Bridges annual event, President of Redlands Camera Club and is an adventure tour leader who arranges exciting bespoke photography travel tours.

Elizabeth Passuello: APSA,EPSA, EFIAP, FPSNZ, FNPSNZ APSEM (New Zealand)
Elizabeth has been involved in photography for 37 years. She is a Life Member and Patron of the Greymouth Photography Club in New Zealand, also Editor of their monthly newsletter and a Website Administrator for their club website.
She also volunteers outside of New Zealand as a Verifying Officer with the Australian Photographic Society, and a Star Ratings Coordinator/Director with the Photographic Society of America.
In 2020 she was a recipient of a Photographic Society of America Service Award. Elizabeth has been entering photography exhibitions both in New Zealand and internationally for decades, from which she has won numerous awards, particularly in nature and photojournalism. She has been a PSNZ-accredited judge since 1995, judging from club level through to the international exhibitions.
Barbara Schmidt, a retired graduate in administration, was born and still lives in the Ruhr area, North Rhine-Westphalia, in Germany. Since May 2014, she has been photographing as a self-taught photographer with her Fuji XT 2, taking pictures of anything that catches her interest, but with a preference for modern architecture.
Since the 1st acceptance on 21.03.2016 at the German International DVF Photo Cup, Barbara received 13.000 acceptances with more than 1200 Honorable Mentions and 600 Medals in International competitions alone.
In the German Photography Association DVF she holds the title Excellence Artist of the DVF and in all renowned international associations she holds high titles.
Since 2020 Barbara has been a juror in more than 100 international competitions.

David Laronde is a Canadian photographer based in North Vancouver, British Columbia although he splits most of his time between the ski resort of Whistler and the lake community of Osoyoos, both of which are also in British Columbia.
David has been designated by the Professional Photographers of America as a Certified Professional Photographer and as a Master Professional Photographer. His credentials outside the professional world include FCAPA, APSA, MPSA, ARPS, and EFIAP/diamond 1.

2014 – Won PSA’s Image of the Year award for digital nature division. 2015-2017 – Included in PSA Top Ten (2015-16 ND, 2017 Nature Print) 2017-2019 – Appointed as PSA’s Membership Director for Ontario; Star Rating Director.
2018-Current – Appointed as judge for Toronto International Salon; as judge for CIPA (China International Photographers’ Association); as consultant & judge for Chinese Canadian Photographic Society of Toronto; as Honorary Chairperson and Consultant for Art of Photography Association (APA) of Hong Kong; as accredited judge for Ontario Council of Camera Clubs; as judge for many others salons in Ireland, India, Cyprus and Hong Kong; as judge for PSA’s annual exhibition(2022); as judge for PSA’s audio-visual competition(2019 & 2021), as judge for PSA’s interclub competition, nature division(2023). 2022 – Won PSA’s Image of the Year award for photo-travel division. 2022 – Won the individual gold medal award from 17th FIAP World Cup for Clubs 2022
Bronwen has been a successful entrant in international photographic exhibitions since entering her first international competition in 2000. Since this time Bronwen has amassed many acceptances all over the world, including multiple international awards. Whilst being successful in most sections, she has had a long standing interest in photography of people, encompassing portraiture, social documentary and stage images. She has also enjoyed working with Creative imagery and, in more recent years, has been enjoying nature and landscape photography, gaining further awards in these genres.
Being a passionate supporter of print exhibitions, nearly all of her first decade of entries was in print salons. She was awarded her Master of the Australian Photographic Society (MAPS) skill honour, via panel assessment with prints in 2008 and her EFIAP in 2009. Then after a long break from entering salons in earnest, she resumed in late 2018 to work through the EFIAP Levels gaining her EFIAP Platinum in 2023.
Bronwen has judged on many occasions for Clubs, Nationals and International Exhibitions. She also spent four years on the organising committee for the VIGEX International Photographic Salon, a print salon, including 3 years as their Vice President. As a member of the Australian Photographic Society (APS), she has served in a number of roles over many years and is currently Australia’s FIAP Liaison Officer, a role to which she was appointed in 2017. In December 2019, the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) appointed Bronwen as FIAP Director of FIAP’s official magazine, FIAP News, a role she continues to this day. In 2022, the APS awarded Bronwen their Exceptional Service to APS Honour (ESAPS) and FIAP also awarded Bronwen their Excellence FIAP for Services Rendered (ESFIAP) Distinction.
A strong believer in photography as an artform, Bronwen values both highly creative imagery as well as truthful, pure captures. When she judges, Bronwen loves to see images that are unique with the makers own artistic interpretation, and images that stimulate visually and mentally to evoke an emotive reaction in the viewer.Bronwen believes that participation in international competitions results in exposure to a world of incredible images, touched by culture, location, world events and the wonders of nature. It has broadened the way she approaches photography and is a path she has encouraged many other photographers to take.
About me: Since my childhood, I was fascinated by the colors and images, then I began my first career as a graphic designer. Life passed smoothly until 1993, when I saw my friend’s photos, which made me realize that I could paint with light by a camera, so I bought my first SLR (Pentax SP II) and started shooting. Two years later I built up my darkroom and got stuck there for a decade, I didn’t even realize that I almost quit my design job, that was how a photo hobbyist transformed to a freelance photographer. I think the technique and concept of photography might be changed by time, but the only thing will remain forever is an optimistic vision because life is always looked much better while being seen via the view finder, so, just press the button and let the images tell the stories. Awards & Exhibitions: Ly has received over 340 international awards since 2006. His work has appeared in over 13 exhibitions world wide since 2010.
